Spasticity Therapy

Spasticity is an increase in basic muscle tension that causes restrictions in movement functions as well as painful muscle cramps and stiffness.

Spastic paralysis occurs in a wide variety of forms. An individual, long-term therapy concept for each patient is a prerequisite for successful treatment. Our treatment concept is multidisciplinary; under the direction of Dr. Christan van der Ven, a team of doctors, therapeutic nursing staff, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists work hand in hand.

Fundamental is the work of physiotherapy. Therapists reduce the spasms and thus pain, they passively move joints to maintain their mobility, strengthen healthy muscle sections, and trigger physiological movement patterns. The treatment aims to prevent malpositions or joint stiffness, and to restore muscular functions.

Our medical concepts intensify these measures. During special drug therapy, we favour the local, intramuscular injection of botulinum toxin, but also use the infusion of baclofen close to the spinal cord via a drug pump, which is implanted at the University Hospital in Bonn. In addition, we provide treatment during physiotherapy with redression and splint positioning.

The goals of our treatment are to alleviate pain, improve the motor functions and mobility of the patients, prevent complications and consequential damage, and facilitate care, thus increasing overall quality of life.
