Regional Project South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda

Three countries, one programme

We support pregnant women, children and vulnerable communities in South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda.

Violence, poverty and natural disasters have led to 9.4 million people in South Sudan still being dependent on humanitarian aid in 2023. Many of them have fled within South Sudan or to the neighboring countries of Uganda and Kenya. Ensuring that they are provided for is a challenge for all three countries. We have therefore launched a multi-country program to provide basic medical care and access to water and food.

Mobile clinics for comprehensive healthcare

Many patients have to walk long distances to reach the mobile clinic run by Johanniter. Early in the morning, patients gather on the village square and wait patiently for their treatment. Johanniter staff use the waiting time to inform people about important hygiene measures, family planning, healthy nutrition and protection against domestic violence. The mobile clinic also offers maternity care. Labeng Joyce is a midwife in the Johanniter team. Five to ten mothers come to her consultation every day.

„I like being with mothers. To encourage them. Children and mothers are vulnerable. The mothers need my support and that is very fulfilling,” describes Labeng her mission.

Hygiene solutions for better health

50-year-old Regina Acayo had to flee her home country of South Sudan in 2017 because of the civil war. In the Palorinya refugee settlement in Uganda, she lives in a small house. But there were no latrine or washing facilities. The sanitation and hygiene team from our partner organization CEFORD built a latrine for Regina. And a hand-washing station was also installed in front of the house.

Conclusion and outlook

The transnational approach enabled us to gain important experience in working together across borders. Above all, the professional exchange and joint planning, reflection and learning have made the program a success. Cross-regional and cross-border programs are also to be carried out in the coming years.
