Primary health care in the areas of WASH, nutrition and health in the province of Cabo Delgado
Project Area:
Mozambique, Cabo Delgado Province.
In host communities, temporary emergency shelters and camp-like resettlements.
Period:
7/2022 - 12/2023 (18 months)
Partner:
Fundacao WIWANANA (local NGO).
Funding by:
German Federal Foreign Office
Target group:
Vulnerable population in acute need, with inadequate access to health, sanitation and health care, including particularly vulnerable groups (children under 5, pregnant and lactating women, elderly).
Health workers, among others.
What it's about:
The number of IDPs (internally displaced persons) in the three target districts (Metuge, Ancuabe & Montepuez) had increased significantly at the beginning of the project. This increased the pressure on the already inadequate WASH and health services.
Most families in both target groups, IDPs and vulnerable host populations, have neither sufficient income nor access to enough land to produce their own basic food. 1.5 million families are in acute need and are highly exposed to the risks of WASH-related disease outbreaks (e.g. cholera) but also COVID, as well as food shortages and acute malnutrition.
The aim of the project is to alleviate the acute need of 30,000 people by ensuring basic health, WASH and nutrition services. At the same time, local prevention and preparedness capacities on risks in the three sectors will be strengthened in close cooperation with health authorities and communities.
Examples of activities:
Provision of basic equipment/equipment and consumables in primary health care facilities.
Training of local health workers on disease and infection prevention and preparedness for outbreaks (early warning-rapid response and control).
Awareness-raising campaigns on disease and infection prevention
Distribution of drinking water through tankers and installation of water bladder storage units at the collective level.
Distribution of hygiene kits, including dignity kits
Rehabilitation/ construction/ repair of water points & sanitation facilities at community level and related equipment for maintenance and upkeep
Rehabilitation/ construction/ repair of emergency latrines in temporary and densely populated areas, and cholera hotspot zones.
Training of local health authorities, health workers and staff in surveillance, early detection, diagnosis and referral of children, pregnant and lactating women and elderly people with acute malnutrition
Technical guidance/support to local health actors/structure(s) and provision of basic equipment and supplies for surveillance, screening, diagnosis and referral of children, pregnant and lactating women and older people with acute malnutrition.
